National Fresh Breath Day…

bad breath advice

Bad breath if we’re honest is a problem for most of us at some point in our life. That nasty whiff can have us turning up our nose and crinkling our toes faster than Usain Bolt running for the last bus home.

August 6th 2016 marks National Fresh Breath Day so we have scoured the internet and asked our dentists here at Smile Essential in Leicester about all things breath related so we can help make your life a little sweeter.

There are 3 main reasons why people suffer from bad breath. First of all, it can just come down to what you eat garlic, onions and coffee are all known to cause a stench. Then there’s dental hygiene. Many people think that brushing their teeth twice a day is enough to keep bad breath at bay, but they’re wrong. Over a third of your tooth surfaces are in between the teeth so if you’re not flossing then you are leaving behind plaque and food which is going to breed bacteria and cause a pong. Lastly, bad breath can be caused by an underlying medical cause for that, such as throat, nose or lung infections and sinusitis, bronchitis or diabetes.

How do I know if I have bad breath? There are a few ways to find out if you have bad breath. You could ask a close family member or friend for their honest opinion. Or you could lick the back of your hand and wait for the saliva to dry a little then sniff.

How can I tell someone they have bad breath? Telling someone they have bad breath obviously runs the very high risk of offending them. If you don’t have to meet the person too often then perhaps just casually offer them a stick of gum or a breath freshener. We liked these tips from wikihow –

Exercise good oral hygiene when you’re around them –

After lunch say, “I’m going to go to the bathroom to quickly and brush my teeth; that dressing had so much garlic in it!”

Show them or talk about how you always keep floss and mouthwash in your desk because you cannot stand having bad breath.

Or if you feel close enough to that person perhaps you could be a little more direct –

“I noticed something, and I’m not sure if you’re aware, but your breath smells a bit off today”

“If the situation was reversed I would want someone to tell me, so I thought I’d let you know that you could use a breath mint right now.”

How can I keep my breath fresh?

Eat a balanced diet, including lots of veggies as it helps to promote a more alkaline environment, so the bad-breath-causing acid in your body balances out.

Snack on crunchy, healthy foods such as apples or carrots these can help to cleanse the surface of your teeth and remove any plaque build up – like a natural toothbrush.

Drink water throughout the day. This will help your mouths own cleansing abilities to avoid your breath turning stagnant and saliva sticky.

Brush, floss and clean your tongue every single day. Remove as much plaque build-up and food debris as possible from all areas of your mouth, not just the teeth surfaces reached with a toothbrush. Also, rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash once daily to keep bacteria at bay.

Chewing on fresh mint leaves or drinking mint tea will help to freshen your breath naturally.

Chew sugarless gum or mints which contain xylitol. Chewing gum increases salivary flow and helps remove some bacteria and staining, but you want to make it’s sugar-free so you’re not feeding the bacteria in your mouth and contributing to bad breath. Opt for a brand that contains the sweetener xylitol, which is antibacterial. It helps fight cavities and bacteria while improving the health of your teeth and gums.

Steer clear of cigarettes. Smoking not only dries out your mouth and body tissues, the nicotine actually squeezes the blood vessels so you’re not getting healthy saliva flow. This combo is what disrupts your mouth’s normal functioning process and leads to bad breath. To avoid this from happening, stop smoking or never start. Ever.

Visit your dentist regularly. They can carry out any hygiene work that’s’ required or look at an underlying problem.

Braces for Adults Information in Leicester…

smiling and braces

Adult braces are becoming increasingly common. People want lovely straight teeth without damaging their teeth. Dental veneers and dental crowns were once the predominant type of dental treatment for those wishing to change the position of the teeth they cared about the most – the front teeth visible when smiling because they felt that being an adult, braces weren’t an option for them, or they simply didn’t want to commit the length of time it took to get their teeth straight.

We have seen huge advancements in dental medicine over the last decade and especially around orthodontics (Orthodontics is a type of dentistry that aims to improve the appearance, position and function of crooked or abnormally arranged teeth). Braces are becoming more commonly seen in people in their thirties, forties, fifties and sixties!

At Smile Essential Dental Practice we offer Anterior (Anterior means nearer the front) Alignment Orthodontics such as ClearSmile Brace. This works on moving the front teeth visible when you smile into a more desirable position. Which means that you get to straighten the teeth that matter to you most, in a fraction of the time it takes traditional orthodontics and because it doesn’t take as long it doesn’t cost as much as much as traditional braces.

Another reason people are more inclined to choose Anterior Alignment Orthodontics is that it is much more aesthetically pleasing. The dentist uses clear brackets rather than metal ones and the wire is covered with a white material, so they are much less visible than traditional metal train track braces. Though we find that most of our patients are just relieved that they can have the straight smile they’ve always wanted in just 6-9 months. Check out the appointment sequence here – Brace appointments are easier than you think…

How much do cosmetic braces cost? We’re always upfront about the cost involved in your treatment and provide you with a full treatment summary which lays out the sequence of appointments and the cost involved.

There are many options to finance your orthodontic treatment. We have a range of flexible options specially tailored to suit you and your needs. One of our most popular finance options is our 12 months 0% interest offer; it allows you to spread the cost of your new smile so you don’t have to make any lifestyle changes. You can see the various rates and options and work out what you can afford to borrow and the monthly costs with our handy online finance calculator .

Anterior Alignment Orthodontics are not suitable for everyone and you may require specialist treatment with an orthodontist. That’s why we offer FREE consultations to come in for a chat and an initial assessment. We currently offer complimentary teeth whitening to finish your new straighter smile perfectly. I was blown away by the thumb sucking aid…

thumb sucking solution

Thumb sucking is something we see often at Smile Essential Dental Practice. Problems start to arise when the habit isn’t broken by the age 4. If thumb sucking isn’t stopped it can lead to problems with tooth position and may require braces later in childhood or adult years to correct.

thumb sucking leicesterWe advise patients to discourage their children from thumb sucking and review it at every 6 month dental appointment. We discovered the Thumbsie® when one of our patients came in proudly wearing one, up until then we have never heard of the Thumbsie® thumb guard. We loved it and her mum let us take a picture. This is one gadget that seems to be working and a thumb guard can help children to stop sucking their thumb.

Thumbsie® was created by a mum of three girls when her third daughter couldn’t stop sucking her thumb. Her daughter’s problem was that she didn’t know when she was sucking her thumb. The Thumbsie® thumb guard can help act as a visual reminder for those children who want to stop thumb sucking but need some help at times such as on a car journey or when watching television. The fabric thumb guards are suitable for children aged 3 – 12 years. They are comfortable to wear and for best results are worn day and night. The Thumbsie® comes in a great range of fabrics, so there should be something for every child.

Lots of children stop sucking their thumb naturally, however dental problems may arise if thumb sucking is prolonged. A lot of the comforting a child associates with thumb sucking is to do with texture and the Thumbsie® is a great solution to help any child break their habit.

Here’s a great parent review from Hannah

“She has been wearing her Thumbsie for ten days now and my husband and I are blown away with how successful they have been. I never thought it could be this easy. She hasn’t sucked her thumb since putting one on, despite being a prolific thumb sucker since she was 5 weeks old – she is now 5! I am so proud of her, especially as it took me until I was 11 to stop sucking mine! The transformation has been wonderful to watch, she is much more engaged in family life and seems much happier and more up for trying new things. We have a different child!.”

Last chance to benefit from National Smile Month 2016…

Leicestershire Dental Practice

Today is the final day of National Smile Month 2016. National Smile Month is a month long campaign designed to create better public awareness about oral health. There are 3 main messages the campaign promotes.

• Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste.

• Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks.

• Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

If we are honest, maintaining a good level of oral health is a straight forward task. Many of us already know what’s required to keep our teeth in tip top condition. But we still choose to ignore the most basic day-to-day hygiene routines and put our health at risk.

A shocking number of people brush for less than two minutes, our diet as a nation has become over-reliant on added sugars while millions of us haven’t seen a dentist in the last two years.3

Consequences of the above over a long period of time, often leads to unnecessary, invasive and expensive treatment.  Most people aren’t aware of the direct impact our oral health problems can cause such as gum disease and tooth decay while the repercussions of poor oral health go further than our mouth.

Over the recent years more evidence has been gathered suggesting that poor oral health also puts you at an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, dementia, complications during pregnancy and male sexual health problems are just a few of the likely outcomes of not looking after our teeth. Now that should have you running to to grab your toothbrush!

Your oral health

Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste

Clean in-between your teeth once daily with floss or interdental brushes

Visit your dentist regularly

Chew sugar-free gum after eating or drinking, especially sugary foods, to help protect your teeth and gums in between meals.

Wait an hour after eating or drinking anything before brushing as then enamel will be softened and you could be brushing away tiny particles.

Avoid snacking and try to only have sugary foods and drinks at mealtimes, reducing the time your teeth come under attack.

2

Your childs oral health

Brush your child’s teeth as soon as they appear with a toothpaste appropriate for their age.

Help your child to brush their teeth until they are at least seven.

Take your child to the dentist early, as soon as their teeth start to appear, this will help them get used to the sights, sounds and smells of a dental practice.

Use a timer or brush a long to a song to ensure your children are brushing for the correct amount of time.

Using a reward chart to track your children’s brushing habits and get them actively involved in brushing their teeth.

Using disclosing tablets are a great way to show areas of your children’s mouth which may need better brushing.

National Smile Month 2016…

dental healthcare leicester

The National Smile Month Campaign is aimed to improve the UK’s oral health. Organised by the health charity the Oral Health Foundation strives to raise awareness of important issues relating to oral health, and make a positive difference to the oral health of millions. This year, the campaign celebrates it’s 40th Birthday!

National Smile Month highlights three key messages, all of which go a long way in helping us to maintain a healthy mouth –

• Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste
• Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks
• Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend

National Smile Month started back in 1977, aimed to address an increasingly critical problem of how to get people to look after their teeth in a time when only one in three people had their natural teeth! It began as a week long campaign called Smile 77 project which focussed on the concept of preventative dentistry. Over the years more and more health and dental organisations have supported the campaign and it transformed into a month long campaign, now reaching thousands of people in the UK and overseas.

7 Tips for a healthier mouth

• Brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day with a fluoride toothpaste. Clean in-between your teeth once daily with interdental brushes or floss.

• Quit smoking to help reduce the chances of tooth staining, gum disease, tooth loss, and in more severe cases mouth cancer.

• Change your toothbrush every two to three months or sooner if it becomes worn as it will not clean the teeth properly.

• Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

• Chew sugar-free gum after eating or drinking, especially sugary foods, to help protect your teeth and gums in between meals.

• Wait an hour after eating or drinking anything before brushing as then enamel will be softened and you could be brushing away tiny particles.

• Avoid snacking and try to only have sugary foods and drinks at mealtimes, reducing the time your teeth come under attack.

Six essential vitamins for dental health…

dental health leicester

Flossing, brushing and dodging fist fights might be the obvious ways to protect your teeth and gums, but diet also plays a crucial role. Here are nutritionist Anita Ellis’ recommendations for a perfect smile.

Vitamin K

“This helps to build bone and keep your jaw healthy,” says Ellis. It’s found in kale and other green leafy vegetables, pistachio nuts, dairy and meat products.

Vitamin D and calcium

“Found in whitebait, cheddar cheese, sardines, milk and tofu, calcium maintains healthy bones and teeth,” says Ellis. Vitamin D, which you can get from fish oils, butter, eggs and liver helps to stimulates calcium’s absorption.

Coenzyme Q10

“This has been found to reduce the build-up of plaque and tartar, which can erode your gum tissue and your teeth,” says Ellis. It can be found in meat, nuts and oils, and is also available in supplement form.

Vitamin C

“Similarly to Coenzyme Q10, Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant and boosts immunity, limiting bacteria in the mouth,” says Ellis. It’s abundant in colourful fruits and vegetables like oranges and peppers.

Phosphorus

“Phosphorus helps stop gum disease and bleeding,” says Ellis. Find it in eggs, fish, meat nuts, seeds and wheat germ.

Zinc and quercetin

“Zinc is useful because it speeds up healing,” explains Ellis. Add to this a daily dose of quercetin (a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory found in garlic, onion, fruits and vegetables and blue green algae) and your gums and teeth will thank you.

Proud to be a Leicester Dental Phobia Certified Practice…

dental phobia advice in leicesterDental phobia is something that we come come across frequently at Smile Essential dental practice. One in four people in the UK suffer from dental phobia. If you are brave enough to reach out and take the first step by getting in touch; then we see it as our personal mission to help you continue your journey to become dentally fit (and hopefully a lot less scared!).

If it has been several years since your last dental visit, then you may be holding onto the image of yesteryear. However, modern dentistry has changed significantly and at our Leicester dental clinic, we are proud that our efforts have culminated in achieving Dental Phobia Certification.

There are many reasons people are afraid of the dentist:

  • Fear of anaesthesia
  • Fear of choking
  • Fear of diagnosis
  • Fear of the drill
  • Fear of embarrassment
  • Fear of future dental work
  • Fear of needles
  • Fear of pain
  • Fear of feeling powerless

At Smile Essential dental practice, we take your anxiety seriously. As dentists we understand you may feel embarrassed about your problems, but you need not worry, we are here to help. We are confident that by working together, we can help you to overcome your fears and give you a smile that beams with pride.

Modern dental techniques have advanced a great deal, meaning most treatments are now pain free. All our dentists have ongoing training in pain management and the treatment of anxious patients. We also have a STOP signal, so that if at any time during treatment you feel pain or are uncomfortable, we will stop the treatment and do all we can to help. As the patient, you are always in control.

The dentist and dental assistant are also trained to guide you through the whole process with meditative breathing techniques to help you control your anxiety. Many of our patients find this hugely beneficial.  If you’re a nervous patient, you might find it helpful to bring a friend or family member along to your appointment for support and comfort of seeing a familiar friendly face.

Fear of pain is a common dental issue and we routinely use a topical gel or spray for all patients to help prevent any pain. For patients with an extreme dislike of needles, we offer ‘The Wand’. The Wand is a digital method of delivering anaesthetic which prevents the bee-sting pain associated with traditional injections. It ensures anaesthesia is delivered in a controlled, pain-free manner.

It is with the above mentioned tips, technology and compassion that we have earned the right to become Dental Phobia Certified.

5 things most people don’t know about tooth whitening…

tooth whitening leicester

Want whiter teeth? You are not alone. It is without doubt the most popular cosmetic procedure in the UK today. But is it a simple case of treating yourself to a new fancy whitening toothpaste? Abracadabra you’ve got yourself a Holly Willoughby smile? Or perhaps you’ve heard about whitening strips? Easy to buy off the internet and a steal at around £50, but do they work and are they dangerous?

It’s important to consider all of your options when looking to whiten your teeth. In this article, we go over the top 5 things people rarely know about tooth whitening. You’ll find out what to expect and be able to make an informed tooth whitening choice…

1) Your teeth might not all end up the same colour

Most people’s teeth are slightly different shades. For example, your canine teeth are darker than the rest of your teeth and your bottom teeth may be darker than your top teeth (pause to look in the mirror). There are literally hundreds of different shades of teeth and each tooth could have a combination of 3 or 4 shades on just one tooth! So whilst whitening your teeth can help to achieve a more uniform colour. It’s unlikely that every tooth will be the exact same shade.

2) Sensitive teeth? You should have a dental health check before any tooth whitening treatment

Suffering from sensitivity could be a sign of an underlying problem. Having sensitive teeth isn’t a deal breaker when it comes to tooth whitening, but it does mean a little extra caution is required. If your teeth are okay but you simply have sensitivity, your dentist can help with desensitising treatments.

3) Whitening strips vs whitening trays

Teeth whitening gels work best when they’re concentrated but whitening strips allow for saliva to mix with the gel and get diluted. Teeth also tend to be darker near the gum line, where the strips can’t reach. It’s best to invest in some custom made tooth whitening trays, to give you the best results.

4) Over the counter whitening products don’t work the way you think they do

Generally shop/internet bought whitening products work in one of two ways – they either scrub away at surface stain which can be abrasive and also remove the enamel along with some staining. Or they can dehydrate the teeth making them temporarily appear whiter than they are.

5) Whitening your teeth isn’t a one off treatment

Even with the best tooth whitening procedure available, your teeth over time will become darker. Everyday eating and drinking will gradually make teeth darker. The best way to keep your teeth bright and white is to keep up with regular tooth whitening top ups.

Our advice

Whilst investing in a professional tooth whitening treatment with your dentist may seem more expensive than high street options, it’s often false economy as it doesn’t give you noticeable results and could be doing more harm than good.

Investing in a proper tooth whitening system can cost as little as £325 with top ups costing just £49 a year. The difference… safe, effective tooth whitening with results that will last.
