Teeth Whitening

The 7 secrets of a white smile

deep bleach tooth whitening leicester

1) Food

Love a curry? The food you consume can have a massive impact on the colour of your teeth. Foods like curry can be criminal when it comes to staining your gnashers! The number one criminal- turmeric. The super spice can really stain your teeth, though it’s apparently good for your health so we suggest moderation.

Back in the day when dentists used to whiten people’s teeth years ago they’d advise them to try and stick to a white food diet. Cauliflower anyone?

Other foods on the most wanted list include: balsamic vinegar, blackberries, rich tomato sauces and pot noodles (can contain turmeric).

Now we are not suggesting that you avoid these completely just keep it in moderation.

2) Drinks

Where to start in the liquid world…

Coffee, yep it has to be coffee. But basically anything that is dark and has a tendency to stick or coat the teeth- so don’t swap your coffee for a cup of builder’s tea.

Red wine is one we all know to be terrible and often you can see your teeth are darker after just one glass, but this surface staining should brush away.  Though however handy you are with your toothbrush, frequent consumption of the red stuff will result in darker teeth.

Strange but true- fizzy drinks, but not because of their staining qualities, rather their stripping properties. You see the acid in the drink erodes the enamel on your tooth surface which is much whiter than the yellow dentine underneath. AVOID!

3) Mouthwash

Unexplained staining? It may surprise you to know that your choice of mouthwash may be culprit! Chlorhexidine gluconate is often found in mouthwashes used to treat bleeding gums. Whilst chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwashes can play an important role to resolve gum problems such as gingivitis, though long term use is not recommended.

Staining caused by using chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash can be removed by your dentist.

4) Toothbrush

The benefits of an electric toothbrush are well documented, but it can be your magic wand to a brighter smile. Staining will build on the teeth on a daily basis and an electric toothbrush can help you to win the battle of keeping your teeth pearly white.

We recommend the philips sonicare it’s technology really helps to penetrate the teeth and give you sparkling results.

5) Hygiene appointment

Plaque build up and staining is a common dental complaint. Plaque build up on the teeth tends to be more yellow in colour giving your smile a dingy look.

But plaque doesn’t just discolour your teeth in this way- plaque is porous especially when compared to tooth enamel. With such a porous surface the staining loves to stick. Curry anyone?

When plaque calcifies it becomes impossible for you to remove at home and a dental hygiene appointment is needed.

6) Professional tooth whitening

Professional tooth whitening can lighten your teeth by several shades and is one of the safest and most effective methods.

There are lots of options available from dentists to whiten teeth, we find the most effective way is by using an at home and laser whitening system.

DIY whitening kits and tooth whitening offered at a beauty salon, is not advisable. You pay for what you get when it comes to tooth whitening, buy the best you can afford.

7) Veneers

The celeb secret, if you want whiter than white teeth then it has to be veneers.

With expert tooth whitening we can guarantee the lightest shade on the tooth chart but it isn’t Cheryl Cole and whilst most people are happy with achieving the whitest natural colour you may want more of wow white.

Get smart about teeth whitening… Part one

tooth bleaching available in Narborough N

Tooth whitening or teeth bleaching is something that most of us think about at some point in our lives. Once upon a time pearly whites were regarded as a celebrity trait, nowadays though it seems even your nan is flashing a whiter and brighter smile.

So what are your options with tooth whitening and will it work for you?
More than a 100,000 people in Britain tried tooth whitening treatments last year and the market is chock-a-block with hundreds of different options to whiten your teeth.
Let’s start with the most affordable one and one you are most likely to try

Whitening toothpastes
Whitening toothpastes generally work by removing or lifting staining from surface (enamel) a bit like a good face scrub buffs away the dead skin this buffs away some of the staining but dentists often worry that they are eroding the tooth surface at the same time. The problem? Well unlike our skin always growing new layers our teeth don’t have the ability to repair themselves so when it’s gone it’s gone!
But don’t sweat it too much! Whitening toothpastes are safer than they used and whilst still abrasive they will move some surface staining so if staining is your problem then this might well do the trick in-between dental appointments

Over the counter whitening kits
Let us just say we have never ever, ever, ever, ever (get the picture) seen this work. Perhaps it has worked for someone, somewhere?

Over the internet bleaching kits
Heard the saying ‘ooh someone just walked over my grave’? Well over the internet teeth bleaching kits sends shudders like a harlem shake down most dentists spine!

These kits can have devastating consequences for people, but don’t take our word for it have a read of this news story in the mail: http://dailym.ai/1IHRcCP

There really are lots of options to whitening your teeth too many to go over in one session so keep posted for part two of ‘Be the know-it-all about tooth whitening…’

images1-5A lifetime of eating and drinking can have a detrimental effect on your teeth. Food and drink contains colouring that over time penetrates the tooth enamel and makes the teeth lose their original colour. Certain substances are particularly bad for causing staining such as red wine and coffee. Tobacco is also very bad for causing discolouration of the teeth.

When the teeth are discoloured they can look very unattractive and it can also add years to your appearance. Yellow or discoloured teeth can therefore cause a great deal of emotional anxiety and self-esteem issues for many people. However, there are a number of ways you can improve the appearance of discoloured teeth. One of the most popular is a cosmetic procedure called teeth whitening.

This involves applying a peroxide based gel to the teeth in specially designed trays. The gel seeps into the tooth enamel and stains it white, returning the enamel to a more natural and healthy colour of white. Tooth whitening is more effective for some people than it is for others but in most cases it will produce noticeable results and in some cases can even whiten teeth by up to ten shades.

Leicester dentists offer teeth whitening as a standard procedure. This is in contrast to about ten years ago when tooth whitening was a relatively exclusive treatment that was very expensive. Greater demand and developments in technology over recent years have made tooth whitening more available and more affordable to the extent it is now considered a standard cosmetic treatment, such as a hair cut or nail appointment.

There is little or no risk involved with teeth whitening if carried out by a dentist. They can use the necessary safety equipment to protect the soft tissue areas of the mouth. The worst most patients experience is a slight feeling of sensitive teeth for a day or so during the treatment.

Why do Teeth Stain and How the Experts Prevent it.

woman brushing teeth.cc search

There are a number of reasons that teeth stain. Foods, beverages, and medications may discolor teeth. Smoking or forgetting to brush and floss on a regular basis may also lead to staining. Stained teeth can be caused by drinking cola, coffee, and tea; consuming other stain-producing foods such as betel nuts, blueberries, or red wine; or using tobacco. These stains are called surface stains.

Expert Tips from your dentist to stop staining your teeth-

• Limit the amount of coffee and tea in your daily diet.

• Avoid smoking.

• Make regular visits to your dentist for professional cleanings.

• Brush and floss regularly and properly. Some toothpastes have compounds that can help remove minor stains for a whitening effect.

In other cases, discoloration may be the result of genetics or disease. In most cases it is gradual staining that has taken place over time and has become ingrained staining called intrinsic staining. In these cases dental tooth whitening can work exceptionally well at lifting the deeper tooth stains to brighten the colour of your teeth.

Is Tooth Whitening Safe?

shrikesh_bWhen tooth whitening is carried out by a trained dental professional it is perfectly safe. Sometimes the public concern surrounding tooth whitening is because it is being carried out by beauticians, hairdressers, and salon staff; who do not have the sufficient knowledge or training and could cause irreversible damage to your teeth and gums.

Dr. Shrikesh Kotecha is the only dentist in Leicester to have Gold Membership accreditation to the British Dental Bleaching Society. He attended a two day training seminar and hands-on for Gold membership accreditation with the British Dental Bleaching Society. After completion of the course participants are eligible for Gold Membership of the British Dental Bleaching Society.
