Your dental health affects your overall health…

Brushing and flossing are more important than you might think. Of course, you’re probably aware to brush and floss for better dental health but are you aware that your mouth health can have a direct effect on your overall health?

Your mouth is the gateway to your body and often if you have a healthy mouth then you will have a healthy body. Your mouth is teeming with bacteria — most of them harmless. Usually, the body’s natural defences and good oral hygiene, such as daily brushing and flossing, help to keep these bacteria under control. However, without proper dental care, bacteria can reach high levels that might lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Diabetes
Inflammation impairs the body’s ability to utilise insulin. By improving your oral hygiene and treating gum disease you can help to bring diabetes under better control.

Rheumatoid Arthritis
Treating periodontal disease has been shown to reduce pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis.

Heart Disease
Though the reasons are still not fully understood, it is clear that gum disease and heart disease often go hand in hand. Up to 91% of patients with heart disease also have periodontitis. It’s suspected that periodontitis has a direct role in raising the risk for heart disease. The theory is that inflammation in the mouth causes inflammation in the blood vessels.

Obesity
Two studies have linked obesity to gum disease. It appears that periodontitis progresses more quickly in the presence of higher body fat.

Pregnancy
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase a woman’s risk of gum related problems. Periodontitis has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight. Researchers are looking into the connection but it is believed that gum infection and inflammation, in general, seem to interfere with a fetus’ development in the womb.

Lung Conditions
Periodontal disease may make pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease worse, possibly by increasing the number of bacteria in the lungs.

It’s important to understand that the body and mouth are not separate. Taking good care of your teeth and gums can really help you live well longer. To protect your oral health, practice good oral hygiene every day by doing the following:

• Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
• Floss or use interdental brushes daily
• Eat a healthy balanced diet and limit snacks between meals
• Replace your toothbrush every three or sooner if needed
• Have regular dental health checks
• Avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol

4 top tips for avoiding an emergency trip to the dentist this Christmas…

Christmas is fast approaching! Everyone is getting ready for the festivities. Mince pies, champagne, selection boxes and lots of sweet goodies will no doubt make their way into our festive diets. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable time of year, but please do spare a thought for your teeth.

Constant snacking, drinking and eating of sugary foods and drinks over Christmas can make the holiday period a miserable time for teeth. The indulgences and tempting treats on Christmas Day and Boxing Day in particular means that teeth are going to be in harm’s way for over the 48 hours over the festive period.

It’s important to be extra vigilant with your dental health over the festive period. Remember, teeth are under attack for up to one hour after eating or drinking, and if you think about how much is consumed, and how often, particularly over Christmas and Boxing Day, your teeth don’t really get the chance to recover.

Dental emergency’s spike over Christmas as we tend to indulge in treats we would normally avoid. Here are our top 4 tips for avoiding an emergency trip to the dentist:

1) We can all confess to attempting to open a bottle of beer with our teeth at some point in our lives. But, please remember your teeth aren’t tools!

2) Nuts! If you have any heavily restored teeth than try and avoid harder nuts such as Brazil, Hazlenut and Almonds. Instead, opt for softer ones such as cashews and walnuts.

3) Don’sip all day on sparkling wine. The sugar and acid combo mean your teeth are at a very high risk of decay and erosion. Limit the sparkle to meal times or have a little snack on cheese to reduce the impact.

4) Toffees! Over Christmas people tend to let their guard down and this is probably the most common Christmas culprit for breaking teeth or pulling out a filling over Christmas – just avoid!

Here’s a guide on what your tongue says about your health…

Dental Health Tongue Guide

If your eyes are the windows to your soul than your tongue has to be a window to your overall health.

When we think about our visit to your local dental practice we often picture the dentist checking our teeth but never our tongue. It might surprise you to know that during our dental health checks at Smile Essential dental practice the first thing we actually check is the tongue!

We check that it looks healthy and also that the other soft tissues, glands and throat are healthy before moving onto checking the teeth.

Now it’s time to stick out your tongue and check that you don’t match any of the descriptions below:

If You See White Patches on Your Tongue

White patches on your tongue signify oral candidiasis, which is an overgrowth of yeast or thrush. Try cleaning your tongue with a toothbrush or a tongue scraper every day for a few weeks. If the patches persist, their cause is likely an overgrowth of candida you should visit your dentist to see if they need to prescribe you an anti-fungal drug.

Black and Hairy-Looking

There are a few causes for a black hairy tongue, including yeast infections, diabetes, cancer therapies, and poor oral hygiene. A buildup of dead skin cells on your tongue’s papillae results in the hairy look. No medical care is needed for this condition; simply practice excellent oral hygiene by regularly brushing your tongue (with the aid of tongue scrapers, as needed), and the problem should not persist. Remember to also change your toothbrush regularly.

Ridges on Your Tongue

Ridges occur when your teeth press into your tongue. This usually happens while you sleep. Fortunately, the ridges require no treatment and go away with time.

Bumps/spots on Your Tongue

If you spot bumps on your tongue they are most likely close relatives of the cold sore. These can be caused by many things, including biting, smoking, and stress. Home remedies can work well to treat this perhaps try gargling warm salt water mouth rinses, eating food that is soft and cold as to not agitate the tongue. Avoid foods that might trigger a negative reaction such as greasy foods. Lastly, ensure good oral health care.

You can ensure you stay healthy and your tongue stays looking nice and pink by having a healthy diet, not smoking or drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. You should also maintain good oral hygiene this includes daily cleaning of the tongue.

Considering a white filling…

White filling on teeth

With 84% of all adults having at least one or more fillings and the average adult having 7 fillings. It’s important to understand the different filling options available to you and go over some of the most common questions asked of our dentists at Smile Essential dental practice in Leicester.

Nowadays tooth coloured ‘white’ fillings can be made to look like the surrounding natural tooth. We treat many people at Smile Essential dental practice that are conscious about their silver ‘amalgam’ fillings show when they laugh or smile.

There are 2 main misconceptions about white fillings and silver fillings that our Leicester patients ask are:

Will white fillings be as strong as metal fillings?

The answer to this question has changed over the past 20 years. Dental materials are constantly improving and whilst silver fillings used to be stronger than white fillings, the new improved materials are now just as strong.

Are white fillings more expensive than silver fillings?

All filling costs vary dependant upon the size and location of the filling and tooth. At our dental practice the difference of cost is quite small. White fillings are around £10 more than silver fillings. The difference is mainly due to the higher cost of materials involved with placing a white filling.

So what if you already have silver fillings- should you replace them?

This is best assessed on an individual basis by your dentist. If the fillings aren’t visible and are dentally sound, then often it is considered best to leave until it requires replacing and then opt for a tooth coloured filling.

However, if the filling is visible and it makes you self-conscious when smiling or laughing then do discuss it with your dentist so they can assess it.

Should you always opt for a white filling?

White fillings whilst comparable to silver fillings in strength and longevity may not always be the best option for you. This could be for a number of reasons with probably the most common being moisture control. It’s crucial when placing most tooth coloured fillings to keep the area completely dry for several minutes and this may not be possible for that particular tooth.

How we’re taking care of your children’s teeth…

Colgate and the British Dental Association have partnered again this year to raise awareness of good oral health in children. Our dental practice Smile Essential is proud to be supporting this year’s campaign and we hope to make a difference to Leicester children visiting our dental clinic.

Children of Leicester have the highest decay rate across the UK and we hope that participating in the programme we can educate all of the children visiting our practice.

Children’s teeth should last them a lifetime and this is the programmes ultimate goal. Ensuring children’s smiles last a lifetime by teaching them to become Tooth Defenders. Working together with our Smile Essential dental team to help your child become a lifelong Tooth Defender!

We aim to support the programme through colourful displays in our patient lounge, friendly information sheets for children and parents, tooth brushing charts, balloons and some friendly guidance from our highly trained dental team.

7 Steps to ensure your child’s smile lasts a lifetime:

1) Brush teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, before bed and on one other occasion

2) Supervise your child during tooth brushing until they are at least 7 years old

3) Just spit after tooth brushing, rinsing washes the fluoride protection away

4) If your dentist recommends a fluoride mouthwash, use this at a different time from tooth brushing to increase protection throughout the day

5) Reduce the amount and frequency of sugary food and drinks

6) Ensure you visit your dental professional regularly

7) Wear a mouthguard when playing sports

Top tips for getting the best tooth whitening results…

Congratulations, you’ve finally taken the plunge and invested whitening your teeth. Tooth whitening is the simplest thing you can do to transform your smile and improve your overall appearance.

Now you’ve invested into a good home whitening system there are many things you can do to help the dental treatment to run as smoothly as possible and give you the best and whitest pearlies possible!

Here are our top tips for teeth whitening

• Treat any sensitivity

Thankfully our whitening packages – Enlighten Home and Enlighten Ultimate deep teeth bleaching systems don’t cause as many sensitivity problems as other whitening systems. Some minor sensitivity can occur but is usually transient and will soon subside once the treatment is complete.

However, if you do get some sensitivity then it’s important that this treated and you can continue with the treatment. Inside your Enlighten whitening kit, you will find a packet of desensitising swabs simply snap and massage for around a minute into the most sensitive areas of your teeth and of course don’t forget to use the sensitive toothpaste that comes as part of your whitening package.

Ensuring you keep sensitivity at bay will help you to continue with the treatment as prescribed by your dentist and will ensure you complete the full whitening treatment and get the best results.

• Consistency

It will help give you a better result if you carry out the whitening on consecutive nights. With our Enlighten Ultimate package, we advise 14 nights consecutive whitening and in-surgery power whitening on the 15th day. Whitening your teeth this way means we can guarantee you will achieve the lightest shade on the natural tooth scale.

• Diet

Diet is generally what will have caused the discolouration and staining of your teeth, so it makes sense to limit any potential culprits during the whitening process. It’s the usual suspects such as tea, coffee, curry and the not so usual suspects such as bolognese sauce and grape juice! When deciding if something will stain your teeth think if it would stain a white shirt? If the answer is yes then avoid!

If you can’t say no to the morning brew then at least wait a minimum of an hour after taking out your whitening trays.

• Keeping it dry

When putting the whitening trays in at night it’s a good idea to make sure they have dried off from the morning. You can also give the teeth a quick dry with a cotton wool pad before popping them in. The purpose of this is to keep the gel as concentrated as possible by not letting it mix with water or saliva too much.

• Keeping them white

Once you’ve achieved you new white, bright smile you’ll want to keep it that way. Ensure you look after your whitening trays and do a top up treatment several times a year. We usually recommend one or two nights every other month. This will help to lift any staining that has built up in-between.
