Be mouthaware: The 45 second check that could save your life…

Are you able to recognise the changes in your mouth? That’s the question posed by Smile Essential Dental Practice in Leicester as we support a charity campaign to raise awareness of mouth cancer.

The dental practice, based on Narborough Road, Leicester is urging Leicester residents to be more mouth aware and recognise the early warning signs of mouth cancer, for November’s Mouth Cancer Action Month.

With awareness of the disease remaining alarmingly low, Dr Niket Patel say’s that a simple 45 second check is often all that’s needed to identify anything unusual and be able to then seek professional guidance.

Dr Niket Patel practice principle says: “Early diagnosis transforms our chances of beating mouth cancer from 50 per cent to 90 percent so it is crucial that we know what to look out for and that we do not hesitate in seeking advice from a health professional.

“A mouth ulcer that does not heal within three weeks, red or white patches in the mouth and unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth or head and neck area, can all be potential signs of mouth cancer so it’s important to be aware of any changes occurring inside your mouth.

“Quite often it is easier to notice lumps and bumps on the outside of the body or to dismiss a mouth ulcer as benign. Most of us will spend at least a few minutes every day in front of a mirror brushing our teeth so while we’re there it makes sense to have a quick look inside the mouth.

“If you keep a lookout for these symptoms then a simple 45 second check really could save your life.

“If you notice anything out of the ordinary, please speak to your dentist or a doctor.”

Mouth Cancer Action Month takes place throughout November and is organised by the Oral Health Foundation.

With around 7,800 Brits diagnosed with mouth cancer last year, the disease is one of the UK’s fastest increasing cancers, with cases rising by a third in the last decade alone.

Survival rates of mouth cancer have not improved in the last 20 years and the oral health charity is concerned that too many are mouth cancers are being diagnosed at a late stage, significantly reducing our chance to beat the disease.

Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter OBE added: “Mouth cancer can appear anywhere in the mouth including the lips, tongue, cheek, throat and gums.

“Mouth cancer can have a devastating effect on a person’s life, impacting on their breathing, eating and speech. Reconstructive surgery could also change their appearance while the experience often has an impact on confidence and self-esteem.

“By developing a greater understanding about the early warning signs and symptoms, the lifestyle factors which increase our risk, and recognising where to go if we notice anything unusual inside our mouth, we can detect mouth cancer early. This will not only improve our chances of beating it but will also reduce the amount of invasive surgery needed to treat it.

“During every dental check-up, your dentist will do a visual examination for mouth cancer and look for anything that might be a cause for concern. That’s why it’s so important to keep regular dental check-ups – it’s not just about the health of our teeth and gums – a trip to the dentist could really be a life saver.”

A WOW experience…

After a lot of online research, I decided to go to Smile Essentials for a consultation about a smile makeover and all I can say about my whole experience is WOW! Even at the free consultation, I was taken aback by the friendly service I received from all members of staff and as I was happy with the suggested course of treatment (whitening, gum contouring and tooth bonding) and I felt it was very good value for money, so I decided to go ahead.

Now that the treatment is all complete, I am absolutely over the moon with the results and it has left me with a smile I am so happy with! However, the main thing that stood out for me was Lina, not just the results she achieved on my teeth, but her warm, friendly and caring manner that puts you at ease at every visit. She works so closely with you throughout to ensure you are going to achieve your desired result and her attention to detail and desire to get everything perfect for you really shines through (which was great coming from a fellow perfectionist!).

This isn’t my routine dental practice but I was made to feel like I had been going there for years and if it wasn’t for the fact that I live 50 minutes away, I would definitely be switching dentists!

Help your kids teeth survive this Halloween with these 5 tips…

Halloween is just around the corner, and many people will be heading out this weekend for Haloween fun, parties and sweets! Halloween is likely to be the one time of year we let our children have easier access to all kinds of sweets than we wouldn’t at any other time of year. But have no fear Smile Essential is here with 5 handy tips to help your little monsters happy and mouth healthy this Halloween.

1) Have dinner before you go trick or treating or to a party. Ensuring the kids are full will hopefully limit how many sweet treats they munch!

2) Ensure good brushing in the build-up to Halloween. They should know that they can only have treats if they have brushed well enough. On the day that they eat sweet treats ensure they have cleaned 2-3 times, thoroughly for 2 minutes especially before bed.

3) Get rid of the loot as quickly as you can! However, you can manage it try and get rid of those sweets as quickly as possible! The more often your child snacks on these the more chance they stand of causing tooth decay. You don’t want your kids to be snacking on sweets and candy for the next week! If you can try and avoid any particularly bad treats – chewy and sticky sweets really stick to the teeth and in between gaps. This can cause a lot to teeth.

4) Drink water. Just because they are having sweets doesn’t mean this has to include sweet or fizzy drinks. In fact, this should be a rule that if they have sweets they will only be drinking water. This will help to minimise any damage. Encourage them to sip frequently and always have a good drink of water once they’ve finished eating.

5) Throw in some kinder to teeth treats. If your kids are old enough then maybe have some sugar free gum. This is great for helping to minimise damage. It also works well to add this in at the end of them scoffing as the last thing they eat from their collection.

Have fun stay safe and clean well! Check out how you can help keep your children’s teeth healthy…

Smile Essential Wear It Pink…

We will be wearing it pink in October. Will you support us? On Friday 19th October we at Smile Essential will be wearing pink, all to support Breast Cancer Now and raise money to support life-saving research.

Why? Because breast cancer is still here. It’s still tearing apart the lives of families and it’s still taking the lives of the women we love on a heartbreaking scale.

Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Everyone’s breasts are different, and your breasts can change with age and at different times of the month. It’s important to get to know how your breasts normally look and feel so it will be easier to spot if there are any unusual changes for you.

If you do spot any unusual changes to your breasts you should get them checked out by your doctor.

Breast Cancer Now’s Research

If we are to meet our ambition that by 2050, everyone who develops breast cancer will live, then we need to make sure we fund the most impactful research.

Our research is focused on four key areas – risk and prevention, early detection and diagnosis, treatment and secondary breast cancer. We believe this approach to research will allow us to achieve our ambition and stop breast cancer taking lives.

Gentle dentists…

I have been to numerous dental practices before coming here, I always felt very very anxious and nervous. Everyone at Smile Essential does their utmost to put you at ease and nothing is too much trouble for them. The dentists and team are so brilliant and they take the time to explain everything before and during the visit.

They are so gentle and you don’t experience even on the initial injection. Also, there is no feeling that you have been to the dentist the day afterwards or even later after the appointment.

I would recommend this dentist and everyone that works there.

7 Oral health symptoms you really shouldn’t ignore…

1) Toothache
Okay, this one is pretty obvious yet it’s surprising just how many people do try to ignore a toothache. Unfortunately, teeth cannot repair themselves so if you are experiencing toothache even if it then goes away you should get it checked out by a dentist immediately.

2) Sensitive Teeth
Tooth sensitivity can be caused by many things. Commonly people suffer from cold sensitivity but you can also have sensitivity from hot and sweet things. The cause of sensitivity needs to be investigated by a dental professional. Common causes of tooth sensitivity are tooth decay, fractured teeth, worn fillings, gum disease, worn tooth enamel or gum recession. Knowing the cause of your tooth sensitivity will help to either address the problem or prevent the sensitivity from worsening.

3) Bleeding or Sore Gums
Bleeding or sore gums can be a sign of gingivitis, an early and reversible stage of gum disease. Left untreated gum disease will cause inflammation of the gums and eventually lead to teeth becoming loose which is not treatable and the tooth will have to be removed. If your gums bleed regularly you should make a dental appointment.

4) Mouth Ulcers
Some people suffer from frequent mouth ulcers and if this is you should seek an appointment with your dentist or GP to check there isn’t an underlying cause. If you have a mouth ulcer that lasts two weeks or longer it’s very important to seek dental advice urgently.

5) Jaw Ache
Jaw ache is mainly caused by teeth grinding known as Bruxism. Almost 65% of people who grind their teeth is due to stress and anxiety, so treating the underlying cause is crucial. Feeling stressed or anxious tends to make us clench our teeth, which results in unnecessary tooth grinding.
Continually grinding your teeth can cause your teeth to wear down and jaw joint problems. There are treatments available to help with the symptoms of teeth grinding your dentist can help to discuss the options available to you.

6) Bad breath
Bad breath not only makes you self-conscious when speaking it could also be a sign that something isn’t right. Persistent bad breath can be one of the warning signs of gum disease or tooth decay. Other causes of bad breath could be caused by what you have eaten, not cleaning your mouth, dry mouth, smoking or other medical conditions. Your dentist can determine the cause of your bad breath and treatment.

7) Broken Teeth
Broken teeth if left untreated can start to cause incredible pain and create bigger problems if left. Teeth can break for a number of reasons from tooth decay to biting something too hard on a heavily restored or weak tooth.

One of the best ways to prevent dental problems from occurring is by brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily. In addition to this regular dental health checks will ensure any problems are spotted early. Our Leicester dentists are focused on preventative care and when potential problems are spotted early then we can avoid more extensive dental work and help you to keep your mouth healthy and teeth for life.
