Diabetes and your dental health…

Brushing and flossing are a lot more important than you may think! You’re probably aware of the effects of not brushing and flossing to brush on your teeth but what about the effect it has on your body?

The mouth is the gateway to your body and if you have a healthy mouth then you are more likely to have a healthier body. Your mouth is has millions of bacteria and most of them are harmless. Usually, the body’s natural defences and good oral hygiene, such as daily brushing and flossing, help to keep these bacteria under control. However, without proper dental care, bacteria can reach high levels that might lead to tooth decay and gum disease and even diabetes.

Many people are surprised to discover the link between dental health and diabetes. Research has been ongoing for many years now and shows that there is an increased prevalence of gum disease among those diagnosed with diabetes.

Inflammation from diabetes impairs the body’s ability to utilise insulin. By improving your oral hygiene and treating gum disease you can help to bring diabetes under better control.

Having diabetes can increase your risk of dental problems? Managing your blood glucose levels is a crucial factor in deterring any likely problems. If your blood glucose levels are poorly controlled you are more at risk of developing serious gum disease, more so than non-diabetics.

What’s more, is that serious gum disease may be a factor in causing your blood sugar to rise and make your glucose levels even harder to control.

Other oral problems associated with diabetes include thrush, an infection caused by a fungus that grows in the mouth, and dry mouth which can cause soreness, ulcers, infections and cavities.

You might be wondering how you can prevent dental problems associated with diabetes… First and foremost, control your blood glucose level. Then, take good care of your teeth and gums, along with regular dental checkups every six months. To control thrush, a fungal infection, maintain good diabetic control, avoid smoking and, if you wear them, remove and clean dentures daily. Good blood glucose control can also help prevent or relieve dry mouth caused by diabetes.

Sometimes people don’t realise that they need to tell their dentist that they have diabetes. However, having the most up to date information on your medical health enables us to offer you the very best care and advice possible. To be able to advise you accurately it’s crucial our Leicester dentists have a full medical history to stop any problems from arising.

We now offer Invisalign…

Whatever your age you don’t have to put up with crooked teeth! If you have always wanted straighter teeth we could help. We have been offering cosmetic fitted braces for some time now and we delighted to announce we have just added Invisalign clear braces to our list too.

Here are some frequently asked questions about Invisalign we hear at our Leicester dental practice

How does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign works by gently exerting pressure on your teeth to move them into the correct position. Each aligner is changed every 7-14 days so it can adjust the pressure in the right spots as your teeth move.

Is Invisalign really discreet?

Absolutely. The clear aligners make them virtually undetectable at a social distance. They are one of the most discreet cosmetic brace system available on the market.

Will Invisalign affect my lifestyle?

You should wear your Invisalign aligners day and night but they can be removed to eat, drink and to brush and floss your teeth. This is often a big bonus for patients that have previously had conventional orthodontics as you have to adjust the food you eat.

Does it hurt?

It’s generally considered less painful than traditional fitted brace systems. Most people being treated with Invisalign report some discomfort when changing their aligners. This usually dissipates shortly after.

Will Invisalign work for me?

Invisalign isn’t a suitable treatment option for everyone. That’s why we always invite people in for a complimentary consultation. This will allow our Leicester dentists to have a chat with you to see if Invisalign would work for you and they would also advise you of your other options, including if an alternative treatment with an orthodontist would be more suitable. If it is decided that this is the right treatment for you, we will invite you back for a more detailed assessment.

How long does Invisalign take?

This depends on the position of your teeth and the complexity of your case. Invisalign can take as little as 3 months. Your Invisalign provider will be able to provide you with an approximate timeline once the Invisalign treatment process had begun.

How much does Invisalign Cost?

Again this depends on your personalised Invisalign treatment plan. Though your Invisalign provider will be able to give you an approximate cost at a complimentary consultation. It’s important when looking at the cost of Invisalign treatment you check what is covered. Such as retainers following the treatment to keep your teeth in place and also any added benefits such as free teeth whitening.

The Ultimate Teeth Whitening Treatment…

When it comes to whitening your teeth there are many options available. However, it is important to bear in mind that not all tooth whitening systems are created equal!

The teeth whitening system we use at our Leicester clinic is a professional system called Enlighten. Enlighten can whiten even the darkest teeth by several shades, in fact, you can lighten your teeth up to a staggering 16 shades! Enlighten is widely acknowledged as the most effective whitening system in the world. It’s the only one that guarantees a Vita shade B1 for every patient. But don’t worry your teeth won’t look unnaturally white. Sometimes the very white teeth you see on celebrities are often crowns or veneers which are made from porcelain.

We have two choices available for patients wishing to whiten their teeth. Enlighten Ultimate and Enlighten Home. Both of these involve a 2 week home treatment however, the Enlighten Ultimate treatment is followed by a 1 hour in practice visit to the dentist. It works by increasing the tooth‘s permeability to oxygen which breaks down stain molecules.

The dentist will help you to decide which option is most suitable for you depending on the shade of your teeth and what you are hoping to achieve.

How does it work?
The whitening gel is placed into your custom made teeth whitening trays which hold the teeth whitening gel without it leaking into the mouth or being diluted by saliva. The trays are very comfortable to wear and are worn overnight for 14 consecutive nights. The active ingredients in the teeth whitening gel pass through the dental enamel, breaking down stains by chemical oxidation. The process can take some time so it is important to finish the treatment as directed by your dentist.

How long do the results last?
Results can last indefinitely with some very simple maintenance. Wearing the trays for 1 night every other month. Continuing to brush with Tooth Serum will also prolong results.

Will it work for me?
Enlighten teeth whitening has a 98% success rate. As with all teeth whitening systems they cannot lighten fillings, veneers or crowns. Your dentists will check and discuss your suitability at your consultation appointment.

Is it teeth whitening painful?
Sometimes there is some transient sensitivity but this passes once the treatment is complete. Enlighten is the only whitening brand to give you: guaranteed long-lasting whitening results and low sensitivity compared to other whitening systems.

3 Sugar Facts You Need To Know For Your Kids…

1) 10-year-olds in the UK have consumed 18 years’ worth of sugar!

Children have already exceeded the maximum recommended sugar intake for an 18-year old by the time they reach their tenth birthday, according to Public Health England (PHE). This is based on their total sugar consumption from the age of two. This figure comes as a new Change4Life campaign launches, supporting families to cut back on sugar and to help tackle growing rates of childhood obesity. While children’s sugar intakes have declined slightly in recent years, they are still consuming
around 8 excess sugar cubes each day, equivalent to around 2,800 excess sugar cubes per year.

Further reading can be found here…

2) Leicester is the 9th worse place in the UK for child’s tooth decay

Whilst the number of Leicester children with unhealthy teeth remains among the worst in the country things are improving. Figures from Public Health England in 2011 showed that half of all Leicester city 5-year-olds had some form of tooth decay. By 2016 this figure fell to a third of 5-year-olds, so things are moving in the right direction but we still have a long way to go.

Further reading can be found here…

3) You can halve your child’s everyday sugar intake with some simple swaps

Change4Life is encouraging them to “make a swap when you next shop”. Making simple everyday swaps can reduce children’s sugar intake from some products (yoghurts, drinks and breakfast cereals) by half – while giving them healthier versions of the foods and drinks they enjoy.

Parents can try swapping:

• a higher-sugar yoghurt (e.g. split-pot) for a lower sugar one, to halve their sugar intake
from 6 cubes of sugar to 3

• a sugary juice drink for a no-added-sugar juice drink, to cut back from 2 cubes to half a cube

• a higher-sugar breakfast cereal (e.g. a frosted or chocolate cereal) for a lower sugar cereal, to cut back from 3 cubes to half a cube per bowl

While some foods and drinks remain high in sugar, many companies have reformulated products such as yoghurts, breakfast cereals and juice drinks, meaning these swaps are a good place for families to start. Making these swaps every day could remove around 2,500 sugar cubes per year
from a child’s diet, but swapping chocolate, puddings, sweets, cakes and pastries for healthier

Sugar amount guidelines

• Adults should have no more than 30g of free sugars a day, (roughly equivalent to 7 sugar cubes).
• Children aged 7 to 10 should have no more than 24g of free sugars a day (6 sugar cubes).
• Children aged 4 to 6 should have no more than 19g of free sugars a day (5 sugar cubes).

There’s no guideline limit for children under the age of 4, but it’s recommended they avoid sugar-sweetened drinks and food with sugar added to it.

What causes bad breath?

Bad breath (halitosis) is a common complaint but one that shouldn’t be ignored. Most of the time bad breath can be treated with a few simple adjustments to your oral care regime.

First of all, you need to identify what is causing your bad breath.

If you haven’t been to the dentist for a while then you should make this a priority. Bad breath can be a sign of tooth decay or gum disease and it is important that these causes are treated as soon as possible to stop them from progressing further.

Visiting the dentist will also provide you with an assessment of your overall oral health and your dentist will advise you on the most suitable home care regime for you.

There are three main causes of bad breath.

1) External causes

This is generally something that you do or consume. Certain foods such as garlic and onions are well known for causes bad breath. Also, things such as smoking can leave your mouth tasting and smelling foul.

2) Oral Health

Many people mistakenly give their teeth a quick twice a day and think that this will be enough to keep bad breath at bay. Whilst brushing your teeth may refresh the mouth by using minty toothpaste the main purpose of brushing is to rove all soft plaque deposits and food debris. If your mouth starts to feel foul later in the day after brushing this is a sign you could be missing out on cleaning vital areas. A good dental health regime combines effective toothbrushing and interdental cleaning. Over a third of your tooth surfaces are in between the teeth so if you’re not cleaning between your teeth using either floss or interdental brushes then you are leaving behind plaque and food which is going to breed bacteria and cause a pong.

3) Medical conditions

Bad breath can be caused by an underlying medical cause for that, such as throat, nose or lung infections and sinusitis, bronchitis or diabetes.

Here are our top tips for keeping your breath fresh:

• Brush your teeth and gums at least twice a day for 2 minutes
using a fluoride toothpaste
• Gently clean your tongue once a day ideally using a tongue scraper but if you don’t have one of these then your toothbrush will do fine for now.
• Clean between your teeth with floss or interdental brushes or at least once a day
• Get regular dental health checks
• Keep dentures clean and remove them at night
• Use sugar-free mints or chewing gum after consuming food and drinks
• Try using an antibacterial mouthwash at a different time to brushing to keep bacteria at bay

Dental Hygiene and Therapy at Smile Essential Dental Practice in Leicester …

At Smile Essential Dental Practice in Leicester, we are proud to now offer the services of a dental hygienist and therapist.

Why visit a dental hygienist?

  • They are specially trained in the prevention and treatment of gum (periodontal) disease which is the main cause of adult tooth loss and also to give advice on all aspects of good oral health.
  • Skill and experience gained focusing on all aspects of gums and soft tissues.
  • A dental hygienist will have more time to spend giving personalised oral hygiene advice.
  • Demonstrate effective tooth brushing technique which is important to have a healthy mouth and avoiding damage

What is the difference between a dental hygienist and a dental hygienist and therapist?

A dental hygienist and therapist in addition to the duties of a dental hygienist can also carry out minor dental treatment. Which means in addition to gum related treatments they have also completed appropriate training to perform: simple fillings, replace temporary fillings and crowns, applying sealants and fluorides to teeth to help prevent tooth decay, take x-rays and apply de-sensitising materials.

The benefits of seeing a dental hygienist and therapists

A healthy mouth is vital for your health and will significantly reduce your need for dental treatment in the future. Gum therapy in Leicester is not only about treating existing disease but it focuses on preventing dental disease and it causes you problems in the future.

The stages of gum disease

The first sign you may notice of gum disease also known as gingivitis is bleeding when brushing or you may notice that your gums are red or swollen. At this stage gingivitis is reversible with the right dental hygiene service and home care routine.

When gingivitis is left untreated or there for a long period of time it can develop further into a type of infection known as periodontitis. Periodontitis affects the entire area surrounding the tooth which can lead to discomfort and difficulty when eating. There are a number of types of periodontal disease and they all affect the tissues supporting the teeth.

Eventually, as the disease progresses the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw diminishes resulting in the teeth becoming loose. If this is not treated, the teeth may eventually fall out and may require extensive dental procedures to replace the missing teeth.

By seeing our dental hygienist and therapist in Leicester and following their treatment and advice you will:

  • Minimise your risk of tooth loss
  • Reduce the risk of developing tooth decay and need for fillings
  • Minty fresh breath and sparkly clean teeth
  • Better overall health and wellbeing

A new found confidence in visiting the dentist…

I have a fear of dentist so being told I need to have 3 extractions in total terrified me. However, I know it’s going be healthier for me to have these teeth removed. I had one of the extractions done yesterday and I was told every step along the way and they kept me calm despite me being scared. But what impressed me the most was how quickly and concerned the staff reacted when I had a Panic Attack after. They did everything to calm me down and help get my blood sugar level back up. Once they were happy I was fine to go they helped me to leave the building and even call later in the day to see how I was.

Thank you Smile Essential I now know I have a new found confidence of being treated at your clinic knowing that I will be cared for to the max.

C.D, Leicester.
