Beautiful Smiles

Are Dental Veneers Just for Celebrities?

Dental veneers have become more popular in recent years due to celebrity trends, but many people still don’t know what they are or if they could help them.

Here at Smile Essential dentist in Leicester we have worked on a number of Veneer cases, sometimes people only require one veneer and sometimes people want to address their whole smile. This blog is dedicated to explaining what veneers are and the treatment involved in placing them.

Dental veneers are wafer thin, custom made shells of tooth-coloured material, designed to cover the front of your teeth to improve their appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth to change their size, length, width, cover up gaps or unsightly teeth.

Veneers are routinely used to fix:

  • Teeth that are discoloured
  • Teeth that are worn down
  • Teeth that are chipped or broken
  • Teeth that are misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped (for example, have craters or bulges in them)
  • Teeth with gaps between them (to close the space between these teeth)

What is the procedure for getting veneers done?

Getting a dental veneer usually requires a few trips to see us at Smile Essential dentist – one for a consultation, one to review your veneers, one to make the veneers and one to apply the veneers. One tooth or many teeth can simultaneously undergo the veneering process described below.

  • Diagnosis and treatment planning. This first step involves active participation between you and your dentist. Explain to the dentist the result that you are trying to achieve. During this appointment your dentist will examine your teeth to make sure dental veneers are appropriate and discuss what the procedure will involve and some of its limitations. We may take X-rays and take impressions of your mouth and teeth.
  • Try Before you Buy. We appreciate that committing to having cosmetic work carried out especially on your front teeth can be a daunting task. That’s why we work closely with our laboratory to create diagnostic wax up models of your teeth with the veneers in place. This way we can work together to see if there is anything that you would like to change before carrying out any work.
  • Preparation. To prepare a tooth for a veneer, your dentist at Smile Essential will remove about half a millimetre of enamel from the tooth surface, which is roughly equal to the thickness of the veneer to be added. Before trimming off the enamel. The treatment can be carried out comfortably while you lie back and watch a DVD from our DVD menu. Your dentist will then make a model or impression of your tooth. This model is sent out to a dental laboratory, which constructs your veneer. It usually takes 2 weeks for us to receive the veneers back from the laboratory. In which time we will make you some temporary dental veneers.
  • Bonding. Before the dental veneer is permanently cemented to your tooth, your dentist will temporarily place it on your tooth to examine its fit and colour. He or she will repeatedly remove and trim the veneer as needed to achieve the proper fit; the veneer colour can be adjusted with the shade of cement to be used. Next, to prepare your tooth to receive the veneer, your tooth will be cleaned, polished, and etched, which roughens it to allow for a strong bonding process. A glue cement is applied to the veneer, which is then placed on your tooth. Once properly positioned, your dentist will apply a special light beam to the veneer, which activates chemicals in the cement causing it to harden or cure very quickly. The final steps involve removing any excess cement, evaluating your bite and making final adjustments as necessary. Finally showing you, your fantastic new smile in the mirror!
  • The review appointment. The dentist here in Leicester will ask you to return for a follow-up visit in a couple of weeks to check how your gums are responding to the veneer and to once again examine its placement.

Let Shrik Get Rid of Your Dental Dilemmas Once and For All

We are privileged to share this recent testimonial with you:

My entire experience with Dr. Shrikesh Kotecha and his staff at Smile Essential has been wonderful!

The staff are very welcoming and friendly. I felt so at ease each and every appointment Dr. Shrikesh Kotecha made sure I was comfortable and pain-free during visits.

I had a lifelong fear of the dentist. This changed when I met Dr. Shrikesh Kotecha and his amazing staff. Their professional and caring approach to care really makes a difference!

If only I’d met Shrik years ago, he has taken all my fears away.

It is a rare thing to find a dentist who is a pleasure to see. But Dr. Shrikesh Kotecha is patient and an excellent communicator. I can honestly say that he is one of those rare exceptions.

Until my treatment, I hated my teeth. They were in poor condition – very broken, cracked and yellow. I put up with my ugly teeth. I told Dr. Shrikesh Kotecha  I wanted a Hollywood smile and that’s what I have now got plus healthy gums too.

I cannot thank Shrik enough as he listened to me & my needs and all his hard work to achieve the look I wanted. Plus I really appreciated all of the aftercare of his calls and his staff’s friendliness made all the difference.

So thank you for my new smile! And it really does give me a confidence boost when people comment on my lovely, white smile! My teeth & gums have been transformed and my confidence in dentistry restored. It no longer seems a chore to go to the dentist but an absolute pleasure and an experience in itself!”

So thanks to Dr. Shrikesh Kotecha and all the staff at Smile Essential , this has been the best dental practice I have visited & I will highly recommend Smile Essential & Dr. Shrikesh Kotecha to all my friends and family.

We can’t guarantee the weather, but we can guarantee whiter teeth for your wedding day.

teeth whitening

Getting your teeth whitened is increasingly becoming a popular part of the preparation process for a wedding. Every bride (and many a groom!) wants to look their best on the big day so along with planning their hair styling, make-up, dress and accessories teeth whitening is often being added to the to-do lists of brides to be.

As with all the other preparations for your wedding, if you do decide to get your teeth whitened, it’s important to schedule it for the right time before the wedding. Professional teeth whitening treatments performed by a dentist can take 2-3 appointments. Having your teeth whitened by a dentist is by far the safest way to whiten your teeth and avoid any tooth related problems on the big day, so whatever the weather when your big day arrives you will have a happy, healthy, whiter, brighter smile.

Love is in the air!

Whether you love it or loathe it Valentines day is fast approaching. Here are our top tips for truly kissable lips.

Luscious lips
Cold winter weather can lead to dry cracked lips (not very attractive) so use a good lip balm regularly. Lips can burn easily in the summer too (or even when skiing) so it’s a good idea to use a lip balm with an SPF.
Check your breath
A quick tip for checking your breath is to simply lick the inside of your wrist. Wait for this to dry and then check the smell. A sour or sickly sweet odour means your mouth needs attention. If your oral hygiene is good this could indicate other problems so you should visit your dentist.
Tasty teeth
We recommend that you brush thoroughly with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes twice a day. Don’t forget to clean in between your teeth with floss or special ‘mini’ brushes. Bacteria can accumulate in these hard to reach areas and may result in gum disease which is a frequent cause of bad breath.
Clean that tongue
Bad breath can also be caused by bacteria that hide in the rough surface of your tongue, where they breed and release volatile sulphur compounds (unpleasant odours to you and me). So clean your tongue thoroughly with a brush or tongue scraper when you brush your teeth.
Mouth washes & gum
Good antibacterial fluoride mouthwashes can help to keep breath fresh and they also fight cavities and strengthen teeth. Chewing sugar-free gum helps with oral care and can give you fresh breath confidence when you need it most.
Drink plenty of water
It is recommended that you drink two litres of water a day. Drinking water regularly will ensure your mouth stays well hydrated and help keep your breath fresh.
Give up smoking
No mouth is truly kissable with ‘ashtray breath,’ but this problem will disappear when you give up cigarettes! Most importantly if you stop smoking you also reduce the chances of getting gum disease and mouth cancer.
You should visit a dentist regularly to maintain your oral hygiene so for that special date book an appointment and give your confidence a fresh breath boost!
Take a look in the mirror
A last minute check will ensure nothing can spoil your smile. Remember you can’t always feel if something is lodged between your teeth! A quick glance in the mirror could prevent that spinach becoming a Valentine’s Day disaster…

The art of fillings

It’s a new year, and everyone has resolutions to make changes in their lives. Teeth are no exception in the whole make-changes-for-the-better thing. They need a makeover too! Even if it’s just as simple as getting your old silver/mercury fillings exchanged for new tooth coloured ones. There has never been a better time as Nik and Lina both attended an advanced composite fillings course (white or tooth coloured fillings to you or I) and have now completed quite a few fillings with the latest techniques. We thought we would share a few pictures with you. If you are a member at Smile Essential Dentist on our Smile Plan you can save 15% discount on cosmetic fillings too!

Are you smiling on your facebook picture?

We all know what www.facebook.com is… and for those who don’t where have you been?!

We have our photos on it… whether we like it or not! Even here at Smile Essential our Practice Manager Dawn who hasn’t got a facebook account is aware that we all tag photos of her at social events, even though she doesn’t have a profile.

Facebook is ourselves in digital form, we have a status, we have a wall, we express what religion we are or not, we have a relationship status, share what we like and what we don’t like and we all have photos.

Is your profile photo displaying what you want it to? There’s no secret, those who don’t like their smile don’t smile on their photographs or will smile falsely hiding their teeth.

So we all scour the multitude of photos that display us at the right angle and in the right light and a shot we’re happy for anyone and everyone to see. If the fact you’re not smiling on your photos bothers you, look at getting something done about it. With the options available you’d be surprised what a dentist here in Leicester can do for you and also how affordable some of the treatments can be. Sometimes its a chip on the tooth and getting that sorted can make all the difference, sometimes it’s that fact you’re not happy with the colour of your teeth, whatever the reason may be we will be able to offer you a solution to make you smile.

Who’s top of the polls in the smile factor?

A dazzling smile and beautiful teeth are simply a must have for any showbiz personality nowadays. But which famous smile comes top of the polls?

A recent survey asked 500 men and women to rate the smile of various celebs on how appealing they are. The Duchess of Cambridge came in top place with one respondant saying ” Kate Middleton has the perfect smile and unlike the showbiz celebrities she also has real class”.

Holly Willoughby came in very close at 2nd place, Holly is now the face of Oral Bs’ 3D White toothpaste with her natural, healthy, white smile.

In 3rd place American celeb Kim Kardashian who is more commonly admired for her beautiful curves.  David Beckham came in 4th place with his wife Victoria actually be voted least appealing smile. Previously at Smile Essential we have had several Patients asking for Cheryl Coles smile but Tulissa has came in 5th place so both the stars Smile Fame is probably associated with the popularity of the X-Factor.

It will be interesting over the coming months to see which celebs people come in requesting their teeth to imitate a celeb smile they admire. What’s great for us at Smile Essential is that all of the top rated smiles are smiles that are healthy and natural. They can be acheived by those of us not so famous through attending the dentist regularly to check your smile is as healthy as it can be and simply uplifting any staining through tooth whitening.

A spokesman for www.ecigarettedirect.co.uk who conducted the survey, said they believed a good smile was a real asset for anyone. He said “It’s amazing how much we judge people by their smile. A winning grin really can open doors for anyone. What our survey found was the vast majority of people have a very similar reaction to the same celebrity smiles. Almost everyone we asked agreed that Holly Willoughby and Kate Middleton had the most beautiful, natural smiles”. “Similary almost everyone expressed suspicion when they viewed Victoria Beckhams pout. It seems we don’t trust a person who refuses to bare their teeth when they smile.
